Ye Ought To Be Teachers

Hebrews 5:11-14

Introduction:

·         This is the third of 5 warnings in the Book of Hebrews

·         First, Hebrews 2:1-3- Take earnest heed, indifference and neglecting our faith

·         Second, Hebrews 3:12- Warning against unbelief and disobedience

·         And now this warning about failing to grow and mature as Christians

·         He has been dealing with elementary truths, and is now ready to move onto higher truth but the hearers are not ready! So he has to challenge them and exhort them through these warnings

I.                    Many Christians are dull of hearing

a.      The rebuke is to believers- ye are dull of hearing!

b.      “Hard to be uttered” - Rather, hard to be “interpreted,” or “explained.

c.       There was more truth to learn, greater depths of faith to explore- but the hearers were not ready for it

d.      It is true, there are some hard things to understand in the Bible but we must labor in the word and study! Illustr- digging for gold (God’s word is more precious than silver)

e.      The word “become” is important. It indicates that they didn’t start out that dull of hearing, but became that way

f.        The word he uses (nothros, Greek #3576) means slow-moving in mind, forgetful.

g.      This is a problem of laziness, and carelessness in our Christian development

h.      One of the hardest task for any teacher is teaching to lazy minds!

i.        Many believers lack discipline, motivation, or an appetite for the Bible.

j.        It wasn’t that the message was too complicated; it was that the hearers were dull of hearing.

k.       Being dull of hearing is not a problem with the ears, but a problem with the heart. The hearer isn’t really interested in what God has to say

l.        This slothfulness in our faith stops all progress in the Christian life and renders us incapable of entering into the full meaning and blessings of salvation!

m.    This was not an intellectual problem, but a lack of spiritual hunger and appetite!

n.      They were content- Paul never was! Philippians 3- Not as though I had already attained, either were already perfect: but I follow after, if that I may apprehend that for which also I am apprehended of Christ Jesus. Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.

o.      If we have truly tasted grace, we should desire more and more truth to live by!

II.                  Unskillful in the Word- v. 12b-14

a.      By this time: According to the time they had been followers of Jesus, they should have been much more mature than they were.

b.      They were still babies! This is not a rebuke for being immature in the faith- it is a rebuke for staying that way!

c.       (Hbr 5:12b-14) A contrast between milk and solid food. (I Corinthians 3:2, I Peter 2:2)

d.      There is nothing more delightful than a true babe in Jesus. But there is nothing more irritating and depressing than someone who should be mature but who has become a babe.

e.      Baby Christians have an unstable Christian life- Eph. 4:14-16

f.        Illustr- Toys R Us “I don’t want to grow up…”

g.      Babes reveal themselves because they are unskilled in the word of righteousness

h.      Solid food vs. milk- v. 12b, 13

                                                              i.      Milk- The basics- illustr- the Abc’s

ii.      Meat- Deeper truth/ bible doctrine

iii.      Note: both come from the same source- God’s word!

i.        V. 14- full age/perfect- as we saw in Christ previously this comes through obedience! See Eph 4:11-14

j.        There are no shortcuts to developing spiritual discernment. It takes discipline, and study II Tim 2:15 (workman)

k.       Note the word "exercised" (5:14) Our senses are exercised (trained by practice and habit)

l.        First Timothy 4:8 says, "For bodily exercise profiteth little: but godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come."

m.    By reason of use- Spiritual discernment comes only by obeying the Spirit of God and the Word of God

n.      God’s primary concern for us is not- hearing the word, reading, memorizing- but practicing what we have heard, read, memorized! Applying the truth to our lives!

o.      Most Christians lack discernment, and most churches are very weak and worldly. If a church puts on a worldly show with lots of music and lots of laughs, they can draw a good crowd.  But if it is just prayer and Bible preaching - shallow, worldly church members will not come.

p.      Unskilled- Have we read the Bible from cover to cover?

q.      I have seen some Christians become mature very quickly, while others it takes them years, or even decades! Some never even become mature, they remain as babes!

r.       It is true that Jesus said the greatest thing in the world is the childlike spirit; but there is a tremendous difference between the childlike and the childish spirit.

III.                Ye ought to be teachers- v. 12

a.      All of us as Christians have had people pour into us, but there comes a time for us to pour into the lives of others!

b.      Some may have the divine gift of teaching, but all believers are to be teaching in some sense! II Tim 2:2

c.       You ought to be able to instruct others. He does not mean to say, evidently, that they ought all to become public teachers, or preachers, but that they ought to be able to explain to others the truths of our faith

d.      Each one teach one!

e.      I Peter 3:15- But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear:

Conclusion:

·         Laziness and slothfulness spiritually is far worse!

·         May we labor to be disciplined and studious when it comes to our faith!
