ENOCH’S PROPHECY

Pastor James J. Barker

Text: JUDE 14-19

INTRODUCTION:

  1. If it were not for this little book of Jude we would know practically nothing about Bible prophecy before the Flood.
  2. We do know from the book of Genesis that Enoch was a godly man (Genesis 5:21-24; cf. Hebrews 11:5,6).
  3. And we know from the book of Genesis that he was in some measure a prophet. I say this because he named his son Methuselah, which means, "When he dies, it shall come" (Genesis 5:21). This name appears to be prophetic. It was a warning to the antediluvian world that God’s judgment was coming. As soon as Methuselah died, the flood came.
  4. Now from the book of Jude we learn more about this prophet Enoch. He is designated as "the seventh from Adam" (Jude 14). This distinguishes him from another Enoch, who was a son of Cain and therefore the third from Adam (Gen. 4:17). By the way, Luke also tells us that Enoch was the seventh from Adam (Luke 3:37-39).
  5. Jude says Enoch "prophesied of these" (Jude 14). Who are "these"? He is referring here to the wicked apostates described vividly in the preceding verses (Jude 3-13).
  6. Enoch’s prophecy deals specifically with the second coming of Christ. This is quite incredible when you consider that he lived about 3,000 years before the first coming of Christ.

I. THE LORD IS COMING TO FULFILL PROPHECY.

    1. Though Enoch was thousands of years away from its fulfillment, he could say with all authority and assurance, "Behold, the Lord cometh" (Jude 14).
    2. Bible prophets were able to see far-off events so clearly that they were able to describe them as though they were already past (cf. Daniel 7:9-14).
    3. This is referred to as "the historic sense of prophecy," i.e., the Bible prophets saw these events as if they had already happened. And of course, as far as God is concerned they have already happened.
    4. Nothing can change the facts of history after they have happened. You may have done something bad in the past that you wish you could undo. All the tears and prayers in the world cannot undo something once it is done.
    5. In like manner, nothing can prevent these future events from taking place once the Holy Spirit has recorded them for us on the pages of God’s Holy Word.
    6. The Lord is coming back. There are many reasons why He must come back and one of them is because all unfulfilled prophecy must be fulfilled.
    7. And not only is the Lord coming back, but we are coming back with Him (Jude 14b). A preacher was talking to a lady and asked if she was prepared to meet God. She said, "Yes, sir. I have a one-way ticket to heaven and I’m not coming back." He replied, "You are going to miss a lot. I have a return ticket, for I am not only going to meet the Lord in the air, but I am coming back with Him" (cf. Revelation 19:11-16).
    8. Do you remember that old song, "When the Saints Come Marching In"? Unfortunately, it has become a worldly song, the kind of song drunkards sing in nightclubs. But there is a Biblical truth behind it.
    9. "Behold, the Lord cometh with ten thousands of His saints" (Jude 14). The saints will come marching in, but not all of us will be in that number when the saints come marching in.
    10. The word "saints" literally means "holy ones," so this great multitude will probably include angels.
    11. Instead of marching in with the Lord and His glorious army of saints, some will be the objects of His wrath (Jude 15). How ironic that worldly people who have sung that song many times will some day tremble and fear when the saints do come marching in! Which brings me to my next point.

II. THE LORD IS COMING TO EXECUTE JUDGMENT (JUDE 15).

    1. It is a fact that many worldly people are taking an interest in prophecy. Take a walk around a bookstore and you will see many books supposedly dealing with the end of the world, the antichrist, the battle of Armageddon, and other prophetic themes.
    2. But despite all of this interest, two facts stand out: First of all, most people are not going to the Bible for the answers to their questions but are going to fortune tellers, false teachers, new-age weirdoes, and other charlatans.
    3. Secondly, and this ties in with what I just said, despite all of the interest in prophecy, most people will not accept the fact that Jesus Christ is coming back "to execute judgment upon all" (Jude 14).
    4. Note the word "all." It does not say He is coming back to execute judgment upon the thieves and murderers. It does not say He is coming back to execute judgment upon the drunkards and prostitutes. It says He is coming back "to execute judgment upon all" (Jude 14).
    5. "For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God" (Romans 3:23). Yes, my friend, "all" means "all" the unsaved. All those who are lost; all those who have never trusted Christ; all those that have never been born again.
    6. This is one of the great themes of the Bible (cf. II Thess. 1:7-10; II Tim. 4:1-4; Rev. 19:11-16).
    7. Let me say a few words specifically to those without Christ: you are lost and on your way to the eternal damnation. The only thing that is keeping you out of hell is the grace and mercy of God. But His mercy and longsuffering have a limit.

III. THE LORD IS COMING TO CONVINCE ALL THAT ARE UNGODLY (JUDE 15).

    1. You will note that Jude uses the word "ungodly" four times in verse 15 and then again in verse 18.
    2. What better word to describe our generation? A generation that has rejected the Bible. A generation that has promoted evolution. A generation that has rejected all Biblical restraints, Biblical morality, and Biblical principles. A generation that has rejected Jesus Christ; yea a generation that HATES the Lord Jesus Christ.
    3. Some would object and say, "But we love the Lord Jesus Christ!" But Jesus said, "If ye love me, keep my commandments" (John 14:15).
    4. Intellectuals tell us that we have entered a "post-modern" age and that old-fashioned notions of right and wrong are no longer respected. I think a better word would be "ungodly." We are in an ungodly age, and the Bible has a lot to say about it (cf. Psalm 2).
    5. Beloved, the Bible says that we must "deny ungodliness" (Titus 2:12). God’s wrath will soon be poured out against the ungodly (Rom. 1:18).
    6. There is another important word here and that is the word "convince" (Jude 15). Today the word usually means "to move by argument or evidence to belief."
    7. But our Lord will not waste time with any arguments when He returns and the ungodly will have plenty of evidence (cf. Rev. 1:7).
    8. But there is another shade of meaning to this word, one that was used frequently in the past. Webster’s Dictionary says: "To prove or find guilty" or "to overcome and vanquish." This is what Jude is saying here (Jude 15).
    9. The Scofield Bible says "convict" in the margin.
    10. Finally, let us look at this expression, "all their hard speeches which ungodly sinners have spoken against Him" (Jude 15b). The ungodly like to make hard speeches against God but God is keeping a record (cf. Psalm 94:3,4).
    11. They are "boasting themselves" now. They are "uttering hard things" now. But God is keeping a record and Enoch said He will come "to execute judgment upon all" the ungodly (Jude 15).

CONCLUSION:

  1. Many years ago an old Scottish preacher walked into a glass factory. His eyes immediately noticed one of the large furnaces, with its door wide open.
  2. The old preacher gazed into the furnace and saw the white, blue and purple mass of liquid flame. The fire roared and it was so hot it nearly burned his face.
  3. Thinking no one was around, he said: "Oh, and what shall hell be like?" But there was a stoker, the man who tended to the furnace, standing in the shadow who heard him.
  4. A few days later that stoker came to church and walked up to the preacher. He said: "Every time I look into that fire I keep hearing your words, ‘Oh, and what shall hell be like?’"
  5. "And I have come here now to find the way of salvation so that I will not have to find out what hell is like." {Cf. Jude 13-15}
