JESUS IS THE MIGHTY GOD

Pastor James J. Barker

Text: ISAIAH 9:6, 7

INTRODUCTION:

  1. Isaiah 9:6 and 7 is one of the greatest of the Messianic prophecies.
  2. W.A. Criswell said, "The text begins in His incarnation, in His humanity, in His poverty, and it rises with great crescendo to His deity and His everlasting kingdom."
  3. Many important names are given to our Lord.  "And his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace" (Isaiah 9:6).
  4. In Isaiah 7:14 and 8:8 we are told His name is "Immanuel."
  5. Matthew 1:23 tells us this means, "God with us."
  6. It is this name, "The mighty God," that I would like for us to consider this evening.

I. CHRIST IS THE OMNIPOTENT GOD

  1. "The mighty God" means Christ is the omnipotent God.
  2. In  Matthew 28:18, our Lord said, "All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth."   No mortal man could ever say such a thing.  No angel could ever say it.
  3. But the omnipotent Son of God could say it, and He did say it.
  4. In Revelation 1:8, the Lord Jesus says, "I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty."
  5. Christ is the Almighty and "The mighty God."
  6. Emmanuel means "God with us" (Isaiah 7:14; Matthew 7:14).
  7. This name has reference to the personal union of Christ's human nature and His divine nature.   He is "God manifest in the flesh" (I Tim. 3:16).
  8. Isaac Watts wrote:

                    Hail, great Immanuel, all divine!
                    In Thee Thy Father’s glories shine;
                    Thou brightest, sweetest, fairest One,
That eyes have seen or angels known.

II. CHRIST IS GOD, OUR CREATOR

  1. At Friday night's stewardship dinner, Carl began with Genesis 1:1 -- "In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth."
  2. John 1:1 says, "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God."
  3. Then in verse 3, "All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made" (John 1:3).
  4. The Lord Jesus Christ is our Creator.  Colossians 1:16 says, "all things were created by him, and for him."
  5. Jeremiah 32:17 says, "Ah Lord GOD! behold, thou hast made the heaven and the earth by thy great power and stretched out arm..."
  6. Jeremiah 32:18 says, "the Great, the Mighty God, the LORD of hosts, is his name," and Isaiah 9:6 says the Messiah's name "shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God..."
  7. Christ is "The Mighty God" in Isaiah 9:6 and in Jeremiah 32:18.
  8. Furthermore, Jeremiah 32:19 says the Mighty God is "Great in counsel," and Isaiah 9:6 says His name "shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God..."
  9. Notice also, Jeremiah 32:19 says the Mighty God will "give every one according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings."
  10. Second Timothy 4:1 says the Lord Jesus Christ "shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom."
  11. Our Lord says in Revelation 22:12, "And, behold, I come quickly, and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be" (cf. Rev. 20:11-15).
  12. Christ is our Creator, our Redeemer, our Saviour, our Advocate, our Intercessor, and our Judge.
  13. He is "The mighty God" (Isa. 9:6).

III. CHRIST IS KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS

  1. Isaiah 9:6 says, "and the government shall be upon his shoulder."  This is referring to the Lord Jesus Christ governing the whole world when He returns.
  2. Isaiah 9:7 says, "Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever..."
  3. All through Scripture we are told the Lord Jesus Christ is the King of kings and Lord of lords.
  4. First Timothy 6:15 says He "is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings, and Lord of lords."
  5. Revelation 17:14 says "He is Lord of lords, and King of kings."
  6. Revelation 19:16 says, "And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS."
  7. When the angel Gabriel visited Mary, he told her, "Behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS.  He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end" (Luke 1:31-33).
  8. David's kingdom came to an end, but the Lord Jesus' kingdom shall never end.
  9. Daniel 2:44 says that God will set up a kingdom, "which shall never be destroyed...and it shall stand for ever."
  10. Daniel 4:3 says, "His kingdom is an everlasting kingdom."
  11. Daniel 7:14 says, "His dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom that which shall not be destroyed."
  12. Zechariah 14:9 says, "And the LORD shall be king over all the earth: in that day shall there be one LORD, and his name one."
  13. I believe these ancient prophecies will soon be fulfilled.

CONCLUSION:

We will write this on the forefront of our banner,—Christ is God; co-equal and co-eternal with his Father; very God of very God, who counted it not robbery to be equal with God" -- CH. Spurgeon.
