PREACHING THE GOSPELS IN THE REGIONS BEYOND

Pastor James J. Barker

Text: II CORINTHIANS 10:13-18

INTRODUCTION:

  1. On May 30, 1792, a humble Baptist preacher by the name of William Carey stood in a pulpit in Northampton, England and announced this text at the opening of a missionary convention - “Enlarge the place of thy tent” (Isa. 54:2).
  2. William Carey then proposed the two following divisions as the themes of his discourse:
  1. Attempt great things for God.
  2. Expect great things from God.
  1. That day has been called the birthday of modern missions. Soon William Carey went to Calcutta, and through his influence there are now missionaries preaching the Gospel all over the world.
  2. Although there are missionaries working all over the world, there is a great need for men and women to answer the call to the foreign field, because the world population is growing but the number of missionaries is shrinking.
  3. It is estimated that at the present time there are about 4,000 independent, fundamental Baptist missionary couples (including those currently on deputation) ministering worldwide.
  4. It is difficult to get an exact count because there are many small independent Baptist missions agencies, and there are many independent missionaries who work directly out of their home churches and who are not associated with mission boards such as BIMI, BBFI, ABWE, Baptist Mid-Missions, etc.
  5. But even if the number were 5,000, what is that with a world population of 6.7 billion?!
  6. They say about one-third of the missionaries now serving on the foreign field are at or nearing retirement age. Surveys of fundamental Baptist mission boards found that many missionaries are leaving the field with no one to replace them.
  7. More than 3.2 billion people live in “the 10/40 window,” a rectangular-shaped area lying across Africa and Asia from 10 degrees latitude north of the equator to 40 degrees latitude north of the equator.
  8. It has been estimated that 95% of the people living in the 10/40 window are unevangelized - many have never heard the Gospel message even once.
  9. Eighty-five percent of those living in the 10/40 Window are the poorest of the world’s poor.
  10. The statistics of the numbers of non-Christians living in the 10/40 window can be staggering:
  • Over 1.2 billion atheistic communists in China.
  • 865 million Muslims.
  • 550 million Hindus.
  • 275 million Buddhists
  • 140 million people in various tribal groups (which are mainly animistic)
  1. Countries in the 10/40 Window include Algeria, Libya, Egypt, Iraq, Iran, Pakistan, Afghanistan, India, and China.
  2. I am not going to say much more about the 10/40 Window.  I only mention it to emphasize the great need to get the Gospel out.
  3. One hundred years ago, AB Simpson preached a stirring message entitled, “Aggressive Christianity.”  He said, “Aggressive Christianity is the world’s greatest need. Shall I try to make you understand the awful condition of the majority of our fellow beings in heathen lands? Can you take in the idea of a thousand millions without the Gospel?… Let me give you the picture of graves. Let us bury them side-by-side all across the continent and allow one yard for each grave. The row of graves would reach from New York to San Francisco and back again twice over. And all of these have perished without Jesus! Oh, as they pass into His presence in their darkness and sorrow and learn for the first time that He died to save them, what must they think of us, and what must the Lord think of us, if we never feel their need and never make a sacrifice to save them?”
  4. Let us consider this great need this morning.

I. INCREASED FAITH (II COR. 10:15).

  1. The apostle Paul wrote to the church at Corinth, “Having hope that when your faith is increased we shall be enlarged by you” (vs. 15). An increased faith is a deeper and a larger faith.
  2. The apostle Paul was longing for a deeper and larger faith both on their part and his own.
  3. AB Simpson  said, “This must ever be the spring of earnest and aggressive work. We cannot give others more than we ourselves have received.  The water can rise no higher than the spring. All missionary enterprise must have its source in a deeper spiritual life.”
  4. If you want to see your faith increase - then pray for missions, financially contribute to missions, and do what you can to help missions.
  5. We enjoy great blessings here at our church - Gospel preaching, Sunday School, children’s church, sweet fellowship, etc.  We are not to be sponges taking it all in, and not giving anything back.
  6. AB Simpson said, “The body of water that only receives the inflow of its tributaries and has no outlet from which to discharge its overflow necessarily becomes a stagnant swamp or Dead Sea.”
  7. FB Meyer said, “What may not one man do in one brief life, if he is willing to be simply a living conduit-pipe through which the power of God may descend to men? There is no limit to the possible usefulness of such a life. There is, on the one hand, the oceanic fullness of God; on the other, the awful need and desolation of man; guilty, weak, bankrupt, diseased: all that is required is a channel of communication between the two. When that channel is made and opened and kept free from the silting sand, there will ensue one great, plenteous, and equable flow of power carrying the fullness of God to the weary emptiness of man.”
  8. God wants us to be living conduits, not stagnant swamps or clogged channels.  Too many Christians allow themselves to get clogged up with the clutter and debris of this world.
  9. AB Simpson had been preaching in a town in the west of England on the subject of the responsibility of Christians for the salvation of people’s souls. The gentleman with whom he was staying had winced a bit under the truth, but instead of taking it to heart and asking the Lord to help him to win souls, he said to AB Simpson, “I thought you were rather hard on us this morning.”
  10. AB Simpson replied, “Did you? I should be very sorry to be harder on anyone than the Lord Jesus Christ would be.” The man then said, “You can push things to extremes you know. You were talking about seeking souls, and making sacrifices. Now you know that we build the chapels and churches and pay the ministers - and if the people won’t get saved, we can’t help it!”
  11. AB Simpson said, “It is very heartless and ungrateful of the people, I agree. But my dear sir, you would not reason this way in a serious physical matter. Suppose a plague were to break out in London, and the Board of Health appropriated all the hospitals and public buildings for the treatment of the disease. And suppose they were to issue proclamations saying that anyone who came to these buildings would be treated free of charge - and best of all, that the treatment was guaranteed to cure them. Now what if the people were so blind to their own well-being, so indifferent and uncaring, that they refused to come, and consequently the plague increased and thousands were dying. What would you say? ‘Well, the Board of Health has done all they could, and if the people will not go to be healed, they deserve to perish - let them alone!’  What? Let the whole land be depopulated? No! If the people will not come to them, they must go to the people and make sure that everyone had the necessary treatment to be saved from the plague.”
  12. AB Simpson did not have to explain any further... the man understood perfectly, and Simpson later said, “I believe, by the Spirit of God, he was able to see his mistake, to take it to heart, and determine to get to work for perishing souls.”

II. ADVANCED PREACHING (10:16).

  1. The apostle Paul said he would not boast concerning matters that were outside his “measure” (sphere of service, the area which God gave him).
  2. However, he said he would boast in the places and persons where God had honored his ministry.  That would include Corinth, where Paul had preached the gospel and planted a church (10:14).
  3. Paul told them that as their “faith is increased” (10:15), he would be able to move out into “the regions beyond” (10:16) and start more churches. This is God’s plan during this dispensation.
  4. This is the Great Commission (Matt. 28:18-20; Mark 16:15, 16).
  5. AB Simpson said, “We never can thank God enough for giving us not only a whole Gospel to believe, but a whole world to give it to.”
  6. “Another man’s line of things” (10:16) means “another man’s line of work.”  Paul would not move in on some other preacher’s ministry. This is what the false teachers were doing to him.
  7. Paul had many enemies in Corinth. Matthew Henry said, “There was no place in which the apostle Paul met with more opposition from false apostles than at Corinth.”
  8. But Paul would not let them hinder him from going forward with the Gospel. And as a missionary church planter, Paul did not “build upon another man’s foundation” (Rom. 15:20).
  9. Paul wanted the Gospel to penetrate to “the regions beyond” (10:16).  So must we.
  10. In Mark 1:38, our Lord said to His disciples, “Let us go into the next towns, that I may preach there also: for therefore came I forth.”
  11. Our Lord has always been interested in reaching the regions beyond.  John 4:4 says, “And he must needs go through Samaria.”
  12. Why?  Because He wanted to save the woman at the well and her fellow Samaritans. John 4:41 and 42 says, “And many more believed because of his own word; And said unto the woman, Now we believe, not because of thy saying: for we have heard him ourselves, and know that this is indeed the Christ, the Saviour of the world.”
  13. David Livingstone, the great missionary to Africa, said, “God had only one Son, and He was a missionary.”
  14. Remember the poor Syrophenician woman, who cried out, “Yes, Lord: yet the dogs under the table eat of the children’s crumbs.”
  15. Our Lord responded to her great faith by saying, “For this saying go thy way; the devil is gone out of thy daughter” (Matt. 7:29).
  16. The Roman centurion said to Jesus, “Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldest come under my roof: but speak the word only, and my servant shall be healed.”
  17. Matthew 8:10 says, “When Jesus heard it, he marveled, and said to them that followed, Verily I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel.”
  18. Our Lord marveled at the unbelief of His Jewish neighbors in Nazareth, and He marveled at the great faith of this heathen soldier!
  19. God has always been interested in going into the regions beyond.  That is why He told Jonah to go and preach in Nineveh.
  20. That is why He sent Philip out into the desert to talk to the Ethiopian eunuch.
  21. That is why the apostle Paul wrote to the Christians at Rome, “Whensoever I take my journey into Spain, I will come to you” (Rom. 15:24).
  22. And that is why Paul said to the Jews in Rome, “Be it known therefore unto you, that the salvation of God is sent unto the Gentiles, and that they will hear it” (Acts 28:28).
  23. Our Lord’s last words before He ascended into heaven were, “But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth” (Acts 1:8).
  24. The ever-widening circle extends until it takes in the circumference of the whole world. That is why we read in Revelation 7:9, 10, “After this I beheld, and, lo, a great multitude, which no man could number, of all nations, and kindreds, and people, and tongues, stood before the throne, and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, and palms in their hands; And cried with a loud voice, saying, Salvation to our God which sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb.”
  25. When will this prophecy be fulfilled?  Only God knows, but in the meantime we must do all we can to get the Gospel out to “all nations, and kindreds, and people, and tongues.”
  26. Matthew 24:14 says, “And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come.”
  27. “The end” refers to the end of this age.  Time is running out.  If you have hears to hear you can hear the distant hoof beats of the four horsemen of Revelation 6.

III. THE LORD’S COMMENDATION (10:17, 18).

  1. In II Corinthians 10:17, Paul quotes Jeremiah 9:24 (cf. I Cor. 1:31).
  2. In Jeremiah 9:24 it is “LORD” (Jehovah).  Paul applies this to Christ (II Cor. 10:17, 18; cf. Romans 10:13).
  3. The apostle Paul had planted churches all the way from Antioch in the east to Corinth in the west.  But Paul was not boastful.
  4. Paul used the word “boast” or “boasting” 13 times in this epistle, on account of the extravagant boasting of his adversaries.
  5. Because of the constant opposition from false teachers, Paul was forced to authenticate his apostleship.
  6. Paul only wanted to exalt Christ (10:17, 18).
  7. The Lord called Paul, and the Lord commended Paul.  In fact it was right there in Corinth that the resurrected Christ spoke to Paul (cf. Acts 18:1-11).

CONCLUSION:

  1. There is an old story about a shipwreck out at sea.  The rescuers went out and pulled the sailors safely to shore.
  2. However, one sailor cried out to the rescuers, “There’s another man!”
  3. As the rescuers roused him into consciousness, he kept crying out, “There’s another man!”
  4. His first thought was of the comrade that he had left dying behind him.   Beloved, as long as there is “another man” in any corner of this dark, sin-cursed world who is sinking into eternity without Christ and without hope, we must do what we can to save him.

“Rescue the perishing, care for the dying,
Snatch them in pity from sin and the grave;
Weep o’er the erring one, lift up the fallen,
Tell them of Jesus, the mighty to save.
Rescue the perishing, care for the dying,
Jesus is merciful, Jesus will save.”
